Kuala Lumpur, October 25 : Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation Datuk Seri Panglima Dr Maximus Johnity Ongkili Presented the MSC Malaysia Asia-Pacific ICT Alliance (Apicta) Award for Best Primary Student Project to SK Dua Sungai in Mukah, Sarawak for their ICT project entitled “JomKaul” today.
The team comprises five schoolchildren who have been involved in the Cambridge ICT Starters project since four years ago and with their talent and creativity have come up with interactive multimedia learning materials for their school.
Their three-minute “JomKaul” video clip depicts the significance of the annual Pesta Kaul in Mukah, and they were also judged on their capability to edit and produced the video using file formats.
The five are Syahirah binti Mohd Pangi (Year 6), Nur Raihani binti Mohd Yusri Azhar (Year 6), Nur Fatihah binti Abdul Malik (Year 4), Nur Amira Syahindah binti Bujang (Year 6) and Mohd Ridwani bin Mohd Yusri Azhar (Year 4). The school was among the nine submissions received for the Best of Primary Student Project category.
Themed “Stimulating Creativity, Innovation and Excellence in ICT” and dubbed the “Oscars of the ICT World”, the prestigious award platform saw 246 Malaysian companies, individuals and students submitting their ‘Made-in-Malaysia’ ICT solutions to compete under 19 categories, including the new Sustainability and Green IT category. A total of 35 submissions were selected for recognition either as Winner or Merits in the respective categories.
The Apicta Awards presentation was jointly organised by MOSTI agency MDeC and Pikom. Local blog “Life through My Eyes’ at www.apistakkisah.blogspot.com by Muhammad Hafiz Ismail received the coveted Prime Minister’s Best of the Best Award.
Other notable winners include Iris Axess P5000 (Iris Corp Bhd) for Best of E-Government, Secure Token ST3 (SecureMetric Technology Sdn Bhd) for Best of Security, Digital Transaction Banker (eBworx Bhd) for Best of Financial Applications, Open Dynamics Sdn Bhd for Best of StartUup Companies and Health3 (UCTI) for Best of Tertiary Students Software/Hardware Projects.
The Winner and Merit recipients were selected by a panel of judges consisting of local industry experts and ICT figures alike, including Tn. Hj. Burhanuddin Md. Radzi, Managing Director of Les' Copaque Production Sdn. Bhd; Norizan Abdul Razak (Ph.D), Associate Professor at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, UKM; Nizam Razak, Managing Director of Animonsta Studios; and many others.
All MSC Malaysia APICTA Winner and Merit recipients this year will also get the oportunity to compete for international recognition at the International APICTA event being held in Pattaya, Thailand later this year. Past International APICTA winners have also gone on to contribute significantly to raising the Malaysian flag on the global ICT stage, with two such examples being: -
• International APICTA Awards 2004 Winner for the Category of “Media & Entertainment”, console game developer CyberPlanet Interactive Co. Ltd., which has since then become a public-listed company and expanded into China and Japan to become the largest console game developer in South East Asia.
• International APICTA Awards 2007 Winner of the “Best Start-Up Company” award, Les’ Copaque now rated as one of Malaysia’s foremost production and animation houses with its flagship animation series, “Upin & Ipin” now broadcast not just here in Malaysia, but in Singapore, Indonesia, Brunei, Philippines, Vietnam, HongKong and South Korea, amongst others.
